Chronic Early Absenteeism and Truancy Reduction Initiative (CEATRI)

This six year initiative spearheaded by Newport Partnership for Families was  a collaborative program of school administrators, community agencies and local volunteers to improve attendance rates at Pell Elementary, Thompson Middle and Rogers High School. To this end, CEATRI has sought to create a school-wide culture of attendance expectation, and culturally relevant systems of support including early identification and engagement. As of 2021, the work continues with the school department coordinating regular meetings to further our efforts to work together to create equitable and inclusive schools where students feel welcomed and families feel heard.

Newport For All Ages

The City of Newport is the first community in Rhode Island to become a member of the World Health Organization (WHO)/AARP Age-Friendly Network. AARP presented the City with its certificate of membership in September 2019. The City’s comprehensive plan already supports age-friendly policies related to some WHO/AARP Age-Friendly domains: outdoor spaces and recreation, transportation, housing, health service, and community support. The Newport for All Ages initiative will build out the City’s plan, working with resources and guidance from AARP-RI and Age-Friendly-RI. On May 25, 2022, the Newport City Council unanimously approved the 3-year Action. The Edward King House Senior Center staff will take the lead in overseeing the implementation phase of the plan.
